Students throughout the Yellville-Summit School District recently held a weeklong change drive in an effort to raise money to reduce hunger in North Central Arkansas.

Students spent the week collecting spare change from family members, neighbors and the community, as part of a friendly competition to see which grades in K-6th and 7th-12th could collect the most change. The first grade class won the competition with a total of $926.43 for K-6th grades and the 12thgrade class won with a total of $377.19 for 7th-12th grades.

Students in the lower and upper school grades who collected the most change receive an afternoon at the City Park and lunch provided by Arvest Bank.

The drive was organized and facilitated by the Yellville-Summit High School Interact Club. The monetary donations from the students will provide 21,750 meals to benefit the district’s Food for Thought Backpack Program. Through backpack programs, children who face food insecurity are sent home with backpacks full of snacks on weekends and holidays, times when they don’t have access to school meal programs.

“Our students love serving others and being part of something that benefits their classmates,” said Liz Leatherman, elementary school counselor and program coordinator for the Yellville-Summit Food for Thought Backpack Program. “These students work hard to make the drive a success and having some friendly competition really makes it fun.”

The donation drive is one of many events taking place in North Central Arkansas in support of Arvest Bank’s annual 1 Million Meals campaign, an initiative that encourages communities to collect food and monetary donations for local hunger relief organizations and programs. Local donations made to the 1 Million Meals campaign will benefit the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas.

North Central Arkansas residents who would like to participate in Arvest Bank’s 1 Million Meals campaign can drop off nonperishable food items or make monetary donations at any Arvest Bank location, or by calling (866) 952-9523.
